About this product

Dowel Basket explained

Dowel baskets are welded in our Umm Al Quwain plant: the dowel bars are held on a steel wire cradle at the specified spacing, height and alignment so they can be placed on the sub-base and concreted in without site fixing. Baskets are made to your slab thickness, dowel size and joint length, and delivered stacked and strapped.

A dowel basket (dowel bar assembly) is a factory-made cage that positions dowel bars across a pavement joint. Because the bars are welded parallel to each other and to the road surface, the joint can open freely and load transfer is consistent along its whole length. Baskets are pinned to the sub-base, the joint is sawn over the centre of the dowels after the pour, and the shipping wires are cut before concreting.

Applications

  • Jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) on highways
  • Airport runways, taxiways and aprons
  • Port container terminals and RTG lanes
  • Industrial floor construction and expansion joints
  • Bus lanes, toll plazas and truck stops
  • Precast slab and approach slab joints

Frequently asked

Dowel Basket — FAQ

How do I specify a dowel basket?

Give slab thickness, dowel diameter and length, dowel spacing, joint length and coating. We manufacture to those dimensions.

Do the shipping wires need to be cut?

Follow your specification: many agencies require the transverse shipping wires to be cut before the pour so the joint can move freely; others allow them to remain.

What is the lead time for dowel baskets?

Standard baskets are produced within a few days; large highway quantities are scheduled to your pour programme.
