Flange nuts with a serrated face grip the surface and resist loosening under vibration without a separate washer, which is why they are standard on machinery, vehicles and steel framing. A hex flange nut has an integral washer flange under the hex that spreads clamping load over a larger area and protects the surface. The serrated version has radial ribs on the flange face that bite into the mating surface, providing a prevailing resistance to rotation. Plain-flange nuts are used on painted or soft materials where the serrations would mark. Flange nuts install faster than nut-plus-washer and cannot be assembled without their washer.
