ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolt explained

ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts are one of the three products we manufacture ourselves. Studs are cut from quenched-and-tempered AISI 4140 B7 bar, thread-rolled full length, chamfered and stamped with grade and heat number in our Umm Al Quwain plant, then supplied with ASTM A194 2H heavy hex nuts. Sizes from ¼" to 4" and M12 to M72, in any length.

ASTM A193 Grade B7 is the standard alloy-steel bolting material for flanged joints in high-temperature and high-pressure service. A stud bolt is a rod threaded from end to end with a nut on each side, which loads the joint evenly and can be replaced without disturbing the flange. B7 studs are supplied with 2H nuts to ASTM A194 and are the default choice for ASME B16.5 flanges in oil, gas, petrochemical and power piping.

Applications

  • ASME B16.5 / B16.47 flange bolting
  • Pressure vessels, heat exchangers and boilers
  • Valve bonnets and pump casings
  • Refinery, gas plant and pipeline connections
  • Power station steam and water lines
  • Desalination and water treatment flanges

Standards, grades & finishes

Studs conform to ASTM A193 / A193M Grade B7 (Cr-Mo alloy, 125 ksi tensile, 105 ksi yield up to 2½"), threads UNC or 8UN Class 2A to ASME B1.1 or metric 6g to ISO 965. Nuts to ASTM A194 Grade 2H. Lengths to ASME B16.5 tables or your isometric. Finishes: plain (oiled), hot-dip galvanized, zinc plated, PTFE / Xylan fluoropolymer. Charpy impact testing for B7M or low-temperature service on request.

Anchor bolts, studs and plate washers are manufactured in our own ISO 9001:2015 plant in Emirates Modern Industrial Area, Umm Al Quwain, with calibrated in-house dimensional and thread inspection. Tensile, hardness and chemical testing is carried out by independent UAE-accredited laboratories, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates are issued with every batch. We supply across the GCC, MENA and Africa.

Frequently asked

ASTM A193 B7 Stud Bolt — FAQ

What is the difference between A193 B7 and B7M?

Same alloy, but B7M is tempered to a lower hardness (max 235 HB) and 100 ksi tensile for sour-service and hydrogen environments per NACE MR0175. We manufacture both and 100% hardness-test B7M.

How is stud bolt length measured?

First thread to first thread, excluding the chamfered points. We supply lengths from the ASME B16.5 flange tables or from your bolt list.

Which nuts go with B7 studs?

ASTM A194 Grade 2H heavy hex nuts. For galvanized studs the nuts are tapped oversize; for B7M studs use 2HM nuts.
