A spring washer (split lock washer, helical spring washer) is a single coil of square-section spring steel. Compressed under the nut it exerts an axial force that maintains bolt tension and its sharp ends resist rotation, reducing loosening under moderate vibration. DIN 127 B has plain ends; DIN 127 A has bent ends; DIN 7980 is the narrow version for cap screw heads. For severe vibration use wedge lock washers or prevailing-torque nuts.
