Shear studs tie the concrete slab to the steel beam so the two act together as a composite section, and we stock headed shear connectors in Umm Al Quwain from 13 to 25 mm diameter and 50 to 300 mm long, with matching ceramic ferrules, for through-deck and direct welding with drawn-arc stud welding equipment.

A shear connector (shear stud, headed stud, Nelson stud) is a low-carbon steel stud with an enlarged head and an aluminium flux ball in its base. It is welded to the beam flange in under a second by a drawn-arc stud gun, the ceramic ferrule containing the weld pool. Once the concrete slab is cast around the studs, longitudinal shear is transferred from slab to beam, giving a composite beam up to twice as stiff as the bare steel. Studs are also used for anchoring plates to concrete and for composite columns and bridge decks.

Studs to ISO 13918 Type SD1 (also SD2 / SD3), AWS D1.1 Type B, EN ISO 13918 / BS 5950 / Eurocode 4 compliant, material low-carbon steel S235J2 + C450 with 450 MPa minimum tensile and 15% elongation, ceramic ferrules to ISO 13918 UF. Diameters 13, 16, 19, 22, 25 mm; lengths before weld 50 to 300 mm. Supplied with mill certificates and weld procedure guidance; stud welding equipment hire and site welding through our partners.

This item is imported from approved mills and held in stock in our Umm Al Quwain warehouse alongside the anchor bolts, studs and plate washers we manufacture ourselves, so complete bolt sets ship from one source. Tensile, hardness and chemical testing is carried out by independent UAE-accredited laboratories, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates are issued with every batch. What is the most common shear stud size?

Do the studs need ferrules?

Yes — one ceramic ferrule per stud, supplied with the studs. It shapes the weld collar and shields the arc.

Can studs be welded through galvanized deck?

Yes, through-deck welding is standard on galvanized profiled sheet (up to about 1.25 mm) with adjusted welder settings and the deck clean and dry.
